Rescued by Dolphins

When I was surviving and rowing around the Broughton Archipelago for 18 months, there were many times I thought I was going to die caught in a sudden wind storm out on the water.  It’s a surreal moment – time would slow and the quiet space inside my body would engulf the outside noises.  Waves pouring over the bow of the boat would splash over in slow motion, I no longer felt the pain and cold and the oars pounding into the water sounded far away.  In those moments I would talk to the Universe.  I would call to Life for help.  And more often than not, dolphins would soon arrive.  They’d bring back the spirit of adventure, of joy, of laughter, of overcoming all odds and this deep knowing I would be safe.

Dolphins have been performing miracles for centuries.  They not only inspire us with sunshine-filled joy, but they willingly choose to defend and save other animals and even us humans from danger.  Why they grace us with such compassion we may never truly know, but their hearts must beat with a love far beyond most.  Surfers have been saved from shark attacks by aggressively fighting them off and forming a protective ring around the injured surfers until they could escape.   Drowning swimmers have clung to dorsal fins and were towed to shallow waters, while unconscious swimmers have been lifted onto their backs and flipped over onto the beach for breath.  Shipwrecked survivors have even had dolphins stay with them for hours, helping them to stay afloat.  They truly are the protectors and guardians of the sea.
